Jimmy Needham:                        Vol. III No. 2
  Freedom in Jesus
August 5, 2008

Jimmy Needham shared a couple of his songs at Gospel for Asia's Renewing Your Passion conference in Dallas in July. Very interesting and compelling music, sung and played by a young man who was obviously passionate about Jesus and His work in his life.

Jimmy was attracted to the blues in his teens, and it comes through today in his music. But the blues influence stops with the musical style; he is personally very engaging and full of surprises. He names quite a few other musical influences, especially Keith Green. Christian music, he says, should either cause someone to repent or worship. No other reason to be listening to it.

Session 9 Purposes of Worship        Dan Gardner

Here is a summary of many of the principle purposes of praise and worship that we have been discussing during this course. Please refer to individual sessions for specifics and further detail.

  1. Not only in obedience to His command, but because of our love for Him, and our desire to please Him and glorify Him - Psalm 50:23, Psalm 69:30
  2. God manifests His presence in our worship. We worship not only to enter and sense the presence of the Lord ourselves, but that others might come into His presence also. Psalm 22:3  We experience the “joy” of His presence. Psalm 16:11 (See “Purposes of Music in Worship”)
  3. To be transformed into the image of the Lord as we “behold him”; to have our minds and hearts renewed, focused on the Lord; to allow the character and nature of the Lord to be revealed in us - His love, joy, peace, righteousness, mercy - His will, direction.  II Corinthians 3:18
  4. To set our affections on things above; worship changes our perspective; we soar above problems that would normally weigh us down — we see “the Christ” in each other, rather than weaknesses and flaws; our vision is “heaven” oriented rather than “earthly” bound. Colossians 3:2
  5. To offer spiritual sacrifices/ minister as priests unto the Lord. I Peter 2:5
  6. To “plow the ground” for the Word (prophetic and sermon); we must actively participate to have our soil cultivated that the seed of the Word will fall on “fertile” ground.  Hosea 10:11 “Judah shall plow”
  7. Worship unifies the body; individually we come into oneness with the Lord, and as a body we come into oneness with the Lord.  II Chronicles 5:13
  8. We enter realms of spiritual warfare in praise and worship and the Lord brings us into glorious victory.  Psalm 68:1
  9. Worship creates an atmosphere for gifts of the Spirit and for “teaching” and “admonishing” one another in the Lord. We reveal the character of God and the Word of God under the anointing of His Spirit as we worship in His presence.  Colossians 3:16
  10. Because the presence of the Lord is manifest, He ministers in restoration, healing, deliverance, and to every individual need.  I Samuel 16:23, Isaiah 10:27
  11. Worship is key to revival and evangelization - as we lift up Jesus, he will draw all men to himself.  John 12:32
